Terms of Service

These are the terms for using Known, the website at knownhistory.com and the Known app for iPhone. They are short on purpose. By using Known you agree to them.

What Known is

Known keeps a file on your car: its identity, a maintenance schedule, the service history you log, open recalls for its year and model, and an estimate of what cars like it are selling for. Known records what you tell it. It cannot verify that work was done, and it says so wherever that matters.

Your account

You need an account, created with Sign in with Apple, Google, or an email code. Keep your sign-in to yourself; what happens under your account is your responsibility. You must be at least 13 to use Known. You can delete your account at any time from the garage menu in the app (Account, then Delete account); deletion removes your data permanently and cannot be undone.

Known Plus

Known Plus is an optional subscription, $4.99 a month or $59.99 a year, that keeps the estimate current, notifies you when the market moves, shows the sales behind the number, supports more than one car, adds Lock Screen and Dynamic Island activities, and exports the history document. Prices are shown in the app before you buy and may change for new periods with notice.

Plus can be bought two ways. Through the App Store, as an auto-renewing subscription billed to your Apple Account, available wherever Known is; Apple's terms govern that purchase, and you manage or cancel it in Settings or from Manage subscription in the app. Or on the web through Stripe, offered to US App Store accounts; Apple is not a party to that purchase and does not process, support or refund it, and you manage or cancel it from the Plus sheet, which opens Stripe's portal. Either way Plus renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel; your access continues to the end of the period you paid for, and you will not be charged again. Refunds for a web purchase already charged are at our discretion; email us and ask. App Store refunds are handled by Apple. Your first car includes 30 days of Plus at no charge, no card required.

What you may not do

• Use Known to find or contact the owner of a vehicle. Plate lookups return vehicle data only.
• Scrape, resell or redistribute the market data or estimates.
• Break, probe or overload the service, or use it for anything unlawful.

Estimates, schedules and recalls

Market estimates are computed from public sales and listings of similar cars. They are estimates, dated and shown with their basis, not appraisals, offers or guarantees of value. Maintenance intervals are generic or manufacturer-published guidance and depend on the mileage and history you supply; always follow your car's own manual and a qualified technician. Recalls and complaints are reported by year and model from NHTSA and are not a statement about your specific vehicle. Known is not a substitute for an inspection.

Your content

Your records and photos are yours. You give us permission to store and process them to run Known for you. We do not sell them, show ads against them, or use them to train any model. See the Privacy Policy for what we collect and why.

Availability and changes

We try to keep Known running and correct, but it is provided as is, without warranties of any kind, and we may change or withdraw features. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Ending things

You can stop using Known and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will say so in the app and update the date above.
